Frequently Asked Questions Is true that all Council jobs are filled by existing Council staff? This is a common myth and is not true! We pride ourselves on being an equal opportunities employer and our vacancies are always advertised and open to non-Council employees. The only exception to this rule is when re-structures are being undertaken within Council departments. If a post becomes redundant the current post holder may be re-deployed into a similar vacant position within the Council. Why can’t I submit a CV instead of filling the application form? Due to some of the key information we require for our recruitment process we do need applicants to complete the Council application form. Although it may seem a little bureaucratic to do this it does focus applicants on addressing the criteria in the person profile for the post which is sometimes missed when a CV is submitted. So it’s in your best interest to complete the form! Will I still be able to get a job at the Council if I have criminal conviction? Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you from working for us as we do not discriminate against ex-offenders. We will only take account of previous convictions if the nature of the offence is relevant to the type of work you would be doing. When will I know if I have been selected to attend the selection process? You will receive an email or letter informing you of such. Alternatively you can track the progress of your application from your home page. If you are not shortlisted you will see a status update informing you of this in your home page when you log into your account. In the majority of cases, if you haven't been notified within 15 days it is likely that your application has not been shortlisted. What if I am unable to attend the selection process on the date shown? Although all we will try our best to arrange an alternative date for you to attend this is not always possible. Will I have to undertake any tests as part of the selection process? The selection process itself may contain a number of assessments depending on the level and complexity of the job. This could include:
Don’t worry it is very rare we use all of these together! And we will give you as much information as we can to allow you to prepare yourself. Will I have to undertake any other checks as part of the recruitment process? If it is relevant to the post a Criminal Records Bureau check maybe undertaken. The Personal/Physical requirements section of the person profile will indicate if this is required. Will I need to bring any information with me to the selection process? If the person profile indicates a particular qualification is essential for the job you will need to bring the original copy of the qualification certificate. You will also need to bring proof of your eligibility to work in the UK. We will let you know in your invitation to the selection process what we will need you to bring. What if I have lost it or can’t find it? It is your responsibility to obtain a copy of the original certificates/documents etc. from the awarding body/organisation. What happens to the copies you have taken of my documents? They will held on the recruitment file for 6 months and then destroyed via our confidential waste provision At what stage will you contact my referees? We will only contact your referees if you are offered the job Will I have the chance to ask my own questions about the role? Yes, usually this happens at the end of the interview. It is a good idea to write down the questions you would like answering so you don’t forget when the time comes. Can I get feedback if I haven’t reached the selection process or I am not successful following the selection process? Feedback is available at any stage of the recruitment and selection process by contacting the recruiting manager . If I am not successful following an application can I apply for other jobs within the Council? Yes of course, we hope an unsuccessful application will not stop you from applying for another job with us in the future. Can my details be held on file for future vacancies? For various reasons we don’t currently hold people’s details on file. However we will be looking to develop a system to do this in the future. |
