In the community as a social worker, benefits officer, librarian, or in a role that doesn’t require any qualifications, such as cleaners, school crossing patrols, kitchen assistants, home carers and also certain jobs where we would accept experience instead of qualifications (e.g. admin work). Or you could be office-based in a clerical, administrative or reception role. Not to mention our requirement for experienced and qualified professionals in areas like HR, finance, civil engineering, planning – the list just goes on. What our employees have to say We’ve asked a few of our people for their honest opinion of what it’s like to work with Rotherham Council. Please spend a few minutes to read through what they had to say about their work experiences with us.
Will Wernham, Environmental Health Officer “I’d worked as an Environmental Health Officer in the Royal Navy after leaving University but was looking for a more permanent work base with the stability of a public sector organisation. I was attracted to working with Rotherham MBC because of the wide-ranging variety of the work I would do, compared to a private sector role. “I work with a number of external agencies including the Police, Fire Service, Housing Officers, Social Workers and the Youth Offending Team, so I’m gaining a huge insight into those areas and invaluable experience. I love the fact that I’m not tied to a desk all day – I get out and about a lot and have experienced some unusual situations. “I will stay working with Rotherham MBC for the foreseeable future as I’d like to gain as much experience as possible to achieve my dream of helping a community in the third world. I’d really recommend a career here, I enjoyed a full induction, I’m provided with all the support and equipment I need to do my job and all of my colleagues have been so friendly and welcoming since I started my job just a few months ago.”
“I’ve been working with Rotherham MBC for over 30 years now and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed every role I’ve had. All those years ago I started as a temp, and then got a permanent position. Working for the Council was considered to be a ‘safe, stable, good job’, and it really is. “I’ve worked across many departments including libraries and benefits assessment before coming to my present role here at RBT, the Council’s Contact Centre. As a Team Leader I’m responsible for managing and developing my people, ensuring that they meet customer service standards as well as targets. I organise staff rotas and even recruit people to my team. I really enjoy being a people manager and hope to gain much more experience of it. “A career with Rotherham MBC is an excellent choice because you have the scope to move between departments and in effect do different jobs but all with the same employer. The Council is a good employer with excellent benefits and I’d definitely recommend working here.”
“Having gained several years’ experience in similar roles, I decided to join Rotherham’s largest employer – the Council – in 2004. My role involves working across the Council to embed community engagement – basically helping Council members and employees to improve the engagement of the people and communities of Rotherham who use our services. “It’s been a fantastic opportunity to build on my knowledge and experience and play a key role in the change and development of community engagement. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to work across the different Directorates, seeing how they work and learning so much. “I am hoping to progress my career with Rotherham MBC into more senior roles and would say to anyone seeking the opportunity to do the same that working with the Council will provide a rich and varied career path.”
Management Development Programme As part of our commitment to enabling all of our people to achieve their full potential, in 2005 we created this training programme specifically for managers and it has delivered impressive results. Ensuring a clear focus on the development of all managers has contributed significantly to performance improvements across the Council. Whether you join us in a first line management role or in a more senior position, we’ll encourage you to take up a range of development opportunities, put your learning into practice and share knowledge and experiences with your peers to continue the delivery of continuous improvement. Our management training is delivered by Leeds Metropolitan University and their partner, Park Lane College. Most of our courses lead to qualifications recognised by the Chartered Management Institute, for example Introductory Certificates and Introductory Diplomas for junior managers or Postgraduate and Advanced Diplomas and qualifications for senior positions (often bespoke courses to meet your individual development needs). We’re also acutely aware that management development often takes managers away from their jobs which can be a problem, so we are committed to providing a supportive framework which will enable managers to carry out real work whilst developing their skills. “Focusing on new management knowledge refreshed my outlook and I felt able to bring what I’d learned to life back in the workplace.” “The course helped me to develop an improved understanding of change and how to manage it.” Manager Competencies If you join us in a management role, these are the competencies we’ll be looking for, whatever the position:
View our manager competencies in full. ApprenticeshipsApprenticeship schemes can cover a diverse range of skills areas and are typically aimed at young people from the age of 16 upwards – though whatever your age, if you’re keen and eager to learn, an Apprenticeship may be the right route for you. Typically 12 months in length, these schemes teach you the basics of a certain discipline like business administration or customer service or even a ‘trade’ like plumbing, civil engineering and there are sometimes even opportunities for newly qualified architects to hone their skills ‘on the job’. Many Apprenticeships include college attendance to study towards recognised qualifications. Work Placements Every year we offer young people – typically still at school in Years 10 and 11 - the opportunity to join us in a work placement. There are a variety of areas on offer and we work closely with schools and Business Education South Yorkshire (BESY) to ensure we provide an effective introduction to the world of work. One of our most popular placements is linked strongly to a two year course in Business Administration taken by 14-16 year olds in their educational environment. These pupils come to work with us for 50 days over the two years when the can put all they’ve learned into practice and experience key areas of the role for real. This is called the Young Apprenticeship Scheme. We also work closely with our Looked After Children and REMPLOY clients to offer them a 30 day placement opportunity in a career area of the Council that they’ve expressed an interest in exploring further |
