Values & culture

We’ve already talked about the progressive, forward-looking and ambitious culture we’ve created – where having fun is all part of the job! – but we’ve also developed a solid set of values which everyone who works with us takes to heart. In fact, our Values are called HEART.

We didn’t just pull these values out of thin air. As an employer which listens and acts upon employee feedback, we talked to a wide range of people working with us across Rotherham and different directorates to gain their views on our culture and the values we should apply to it. Now HEART is very much embedded in the Council and reflects the behaviour you can expect to receive from others as well as how you should treat colleagues and business partners.

HEART stands for:

Help each other to learn and develop
Empower through open, clear communication
Appreciate and respect each other and our customers
Recognise and acknowledge contributions
Try new ideas and approaches

Employee Competencies

When you work with Rotherham MBC we’ll expect you to bring our HEART values to life in everything you do. These competencies underpin HEART and define what our employees need to be, know and do at work:

· Encourage creativity, comment and commitment

· Communicate openly and honestly

· Promote learning to full potential

· Be realistic about timescales

· Recognise and celebrate diversity

· Respond positively to feedback

· Seek to reduce bureaucracy and deliver Best Practice

· Act as an ambassador for the Council

· Take ownership of your work

· Take ownership of your personal development

The Investors in People (IiP)

The IiP Standard was developed by a partnership of leading businesses and national organisations to help improve performance and achieve goals through the management and development of employees. We have been an accredited with the Standard since 2003 and have recently been awarded with both Gold and Champion Status.

Investors in People describe this in the following way:

‘Gold represents achievement of world class best practice. It shows a truly cutting-edge organisation operating at the very highest levels of people management practice using Investors in People to drive the business forward.’

‘Champions are a prestigious group of role model organisations who promote IiP through a series of best practice sharing activities. They have been outstanding in promoting the values and principles of IiP, leading by example in the way they manage and develop their people’.

Equalities and Diversity

We are committed to meeting the needs and aspirations of Rotherham Borough’s diverse communities and we aim to have a workforce which reflects that diversity.

That’s why we ensure that our employment opportunities and recruitment process are accessible and open to everyone. We will also make reasonable adjustments to a job or workplace to ensure that disabled people can access jobs, fulfil their potential and progress their careers further.

View our Corporate Equality Strategy and Action Plan which sets out our committment.

Challenging Discrimination

As a Council we have a legal responsibility to ensure that no discrimination takes place and that equality of opportunity is an integral part of the recruitment process. We are committed to managing diversity during recruitment so that there are no unnecessary barriers to any appropriately-skilled person applying for a position.

This includes ensuring that there is no discrimination on the grounds of disability, gender, marital status, age, race, religion or sexuality. View our policy relating to this.

Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults

The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and vulnerable adults and we expect all staff to share this commitment. If you will have contact with children and/or vulnerable adults as part of your job, we will undertake a Criminal Records Bureau check before offering you the position.

The Person Profile for the role you are applying for (Personal/Physical requirements section) will tell you whether the role requires this check and, if so, at what level.

Having a criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from working with us. It depends on many factors including the nature of the offence. If you would like to discuss whether a conviction would prevent you from working with children, young people or vulnerable adults, please phone our Human Resources department on (01709) 334141 in complete confidence for advice.

Location

Set in the beautiful surroundings of South Yorkshire, Rotherham is a real ‘central UK’ location perfectly placed and with excellent road and rail links.

Our area boasts scenic rolling countryside and picturesque villages as well as modern, urban living areas - in fact, 70% of our region is rural, so you can enjoy the buzz of the town centre and all its attractions as well as the slower pace and quality of life rural living has to offer.

Rotherham can also boast a staggering range of award-winning attractions – fancy an indoor bungee jump or fly fishing in the middle of a lake seated in an inflatable armchair?

Rotherham really does have it all for people who want to live and work here. Please click on these links to find out more about the housing, schools, college and leisure options available:
